The Best Hotel in Shanghai

Why the W hotel is the perfect retreat in a city of 25 million

Shanghai is the city of the future with its reliable and extensive public transportation system, futuristic high rise buildings, and love for technology. Shanghai provides visitors with an unforgettable experience. Having visited 40+ countries and not yet seeing China, I knew Shanghai would make the perfect introduction. I can still vividly recall the deliciousness of the Xiaolongbao dumplings, the hospitality of the friendly masses, and the futuristic modern appeal that brought me to the world’s most populated city. More than any other thing that stands out is where we stayed - the W Shanghai The Bund, which in this author’s humble opinion is the best hotel in Shanghai.

The Space

The W Shanghai is what you come to expect from a 5 star hotel that provides for all your travel needs, but what makes this place special is that they’ve created a stylish escape from the hustle and bussle of the city. The attention to detail throughout the W Shanghai hotel is seen in everything throughout the decor, food, staff, and overall branding.

The space has 2 incredible restaurants, 3 stylish bars, a luxurious spa, an indoor and outdoor pool, and a fitness center! The hotel is located conveniently close to the French Concession and the Bund. Both restaurants serve amazing food, the bars offer inventive and classic drinks, the rooms offer spectacular views, and the staff will make you feel like a VIP.

The Food

Breakfast at the W Shanghai consists of a spectacular breakfast buffet served at the Kitchen Table restaurant. If you do find yourself in a hurry you can just grab a fresh pastry and a coffee to go.

Let me warn you though, the breakfast buffet is hard to pass up! It contains a delectable spread like none other. With various food stations it allows you to indulge in a variety of dishes from around the world. You can choose between Eastern breakfast dishes like noodle soup or a more Western breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast.

The breakfast buffet offers a bounty of food stations. A sampling of items you can find include an array of fruits and vegetables, cheeses from around the world, cured meats, a galore of egg dishes, sausages, and a variety of side dishes to complement any diet. Did I mention the pastry spread? It’s not to be missed because the pastries are baked fresh daily by Chef Stefan Medwenitsch and his team. His croissants brought back fond memories of Paris and I would even dare to say that it rivals croissants I’ve had in France. Not only do they look scrumptious but they are delectable. Within the spread you can find donuts, mini loaves, croissants, and all the other classic breakfast pastries from around the world.

If you happen to be there on a Sunday, then make sure to reserve a table for their Sunday brunch. The elaborate and exquisite brunch is paired with live music and fresh cocktails. Not only will you have fun, but get to indulge in exquisite dishes.

If you are hankering for an elevated Cantonese food experience, then head downstairs to Yen restaurant where you can treat your taste buds. A reservation is encouraged and make sure to leave room for dessert. Also, make sure to grab a drink at Liquid at Yen where you can enjoy a gourmet cocktail with an amazing view.

The Room

Splurge and book a room with a view. Our spot was located on the 28th floor and it overlooked the spectacular Shanghai skyline. The view at night is honestly jaw-dropping gorgeous. The spacious rooms are modernly designed with comfort and appeal to meet all of your needs. All of the remote controls are conveniently located next to your bed. The room can be set with an assortment of mood lighting and is equipped with remote controlled blackout shades. The bed in our room was so comfortable that it helped us tap into our REM sleep easily. In the bathroom you will find double sinks, a Toto toilet, and a steam shower equipped with a rainfall showerhead. There is also a spacious closet that becomes the perfect place to store all of your luggage and shopping bags. Make sure to also take advantage of the 24-hour room service that offers great food within the comfort of your room.

The Service

The staff at the W Shanghai is attentive, friendly, and helpful. As soon as you arrive the staff will provide you with a welcoming vibe that will help ease jet lag symptoms. The hospitable staff will help you navigate the city, help you fetch a cab and provide with answers to all of your traveling needs. At every turn someone is waiting to direct your next move, push the elevator button, and surprise you with the unexpected. It’s rare when you come across a hotel with service at this level.
